Rams Head Coach Sean McVay – Media Availability – January 9, 2022

(Opening Statement)

“Tough one today. Our guys came out ready to go. We just got to finish. Credit the Niners. They made more plays than we did at the end. We’ll move forward the right way. But this was a tough one today.”

(On what changed for the team in the third quarter)

“Yeah, we weren’t able to run the ball at all. We didn’t get any efficiency running the ball and then we were having trouble protecting.”

(On what he said to the team to get them back on track in the fourth quarter)

“Yeah guys made plays. I thought an unbelievable play by (CB) Jalen (Ramsey) and then a handful of great plays, great individual efforts, (QB) Matthew (Stafford) and (WR) Cooper (Kupp) hooking up on that 3rd down and then being able to finish it out on the touchdown. But they made a lot of plays. I thought we were going to be able to win the game there, but we ultimately didn’t get it done.”

(On still winning the NFC West with the Cardinals loss to Seattle and if this still feels like a blown opportunity)

“Yeah, I mean, in the moment right now, this is a tough feeling. Our guys did a good job being able to navigate through the season. To be able to still win the division is a good accomplishment, but I don’t know that right now is a time to celebrate that. We’ll look at this film, we’ll clean it up, and we’ll move forward the right way. This is a resilient group.”

(On if this was an uncharacteristic performance from our offensive line)

“No, not really. They did a good job. They got after us a little bit.”

(On how the team looked like a Super Bowl team in the first half)

“You’ve got to finish. Our guys came out ready to go but you’ve got to play four quarters, or five quarters in this instance. Credit them, they did a good job. I have to do a better job, we can all do a better job, and fortunately this isn’t the end for us.”

(On how to ensure we make get over this loss quickly)

“You just move on the right way. You look at it, you’re honest with the assessment of it and we’ll keep it moving and we’ll start our preparation as soon as tomorrow.”

(On how he evaluates where the team is with star players performing at a high level and other problems coming to the surface)

“Yeah, I think you’ve got to look at each play as its own entity. If we end up making a couple plays in that last drive, this is a totally different tenor and temperature of the conversation, but we’ve got to be able to do it. Not going to make excuses. We’ll go back to work and we’ll get this thing figured out.”
